Using Variables to Dynamically Insert Elements for Inbound Personalization

In Mutiny, you can add variables to include custom values directly in your experiences.

Updated over a week ago

This article focuses on inserting dynamic elements for inbound personalization.

Mutiny has the capability of dynamically inserting variables into your page content. Your options for variables are dependent on the data sources you have implemented and the definition of the segment you are personalizing.

Note: For inbound personalization, broader personalization such as naming the user's industry generally performs better than using the company name or logo.

You will be able to dynamically insert any variable from a data source that is included in your segment definition

For example, if you want to insert a Salesforce variable, you must have a Salesforce variable defined in your segment. We recommended adding the exact variable you want to insert into your segment definition with "exists" logic.

Let's take a look at a few scenarios:

Scenario 1 - Insert industry name

Goal: Insert the user's industry name dynamically into your page content. You may want to change your messaging to "Best Payroll Software for {industry}" or "We serve thousands of {industry} customers".

Execution:
Step 1 - Create your segment
Include Industry or Sub Industry "Exists" in your segment definition. If you have additional criteria, include it here. Hit "Review and personalize" and give it a name.

Step 2 - Create your experience
Choose the component that you want to run it on and click "Experience settings." Create a new experience by adding the URL for the page you want to personalize. Click "Open editor."

Step 3 - Create your personalizations
Click the element you want to change and edit it in the Text/HTML box in the right hand panel. Click on the blue + Variable icon to select the variable to dynamically insert.

Step 4 - Save and Launch
When your modifications are complete, hit Launch to roll out your experience!

Scenario 2 - Insert a custom variable for each account from Salesforce

Goal: Insert a custom variable you have saved as a Salesforce column into your personalized experience. You may want to write a custom headline for each account, replace an image with the company's logo, or insert the name of the company's app.

Execution:
Step 1 - Create your segment
Include the Salesforce column name with "Exists" matching in your segment definition. If the column name does not show up in the Attribute list, make sure you have mapped the column.
If you have additional criteria, include it here. Hit save and give it a name.

Step 2 - Create your experience
Create a new experience by adding the URL for the page you want to personalize. Click "Start personalizing."

Step 3 - Create your personalizations
Click the element you want to change and edit it in the Text/HTML box in the right hand panel. Click on the blue + Variable icon to select the variable to dynamically insert.

Step 4 - Save and Launch
When your modifications are complete, hit Save and Launch your experience!

Scenario 3 - Insert city name

Goal: Dynamically insert the name of the user's city, state, or country into your page content. You may want to change your messaging to "Best Payroll Software in {city}" or "We serve thousands of {country} customers".

Execution:
Step 1 - Create your segment
Include Current City, State, or Country "Exists" in your segment definition.
